Pet Wellness Exams & Preventative Care

What your pet needs can sometimes be a mystery. That’s where we come in! At Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen, we offer a range of preventative wellness services to keep your forever friend happy and healthy. Each pet is unique and all of our patients receive a unique preventative care plan tailored to their personal healthcare needs.

We encourage all of our patients to visit us at least once a year for a wellness exam, necessary vaccines, dental care and routine diagnostic screenings. We believe it is our responsibility to educate our clients on responsible pet ownership to keep their pet healthy between routine visits. We invite you to learn more about our various wellness services below. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a visit, give us a call.

Examinations

A lot can happen in one year. That’s why we highly encourage our clients to visit us at least once a year. Some pets may benefit from multiple visits a year depending on their age and health. During a wellness exam, one of our doctors will examine your pet from nose-to-tail, gaining a better picture of their overall health, as well as check for any areas of concern. Simply by looking at their eyes, ears and oral cavity, feeling joints, muscles, and the abdomen, and listening to the heart and lungs, we are able to detect potential abnormalities during early stages when they are most treatable.

Client education is important to us. If you have any questions or concerns as a pet owner, a wellness visit is the perfect opportunity to discuss your pet’s health and at-home care with a knowledgeable and trustworthy veterinary professional.

Vaccinations

Vaccines play a vital role in preventative care, preventing diseases that were once fatal. Every pet is different, meaning they require different vaccines based on lifestyle, risk of exposure, disease severity and infectiousness to humans. We may recommend additional vaccines based on these factors, however, core vaccines are strongly recommended for all patients.

  • Core Dog Vaccines: DHPP (Canine Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza) and Rabies
  • Core Cat Vaccines: FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) and Rabies

Based on your pet’s risk and lifestyle, we may also recommend:

  • Non-Core Dog Vaccines: Bordetella, Lyme, and Leptospirosis
  • Non-Core Cat Vaccines: Feline Leukemia, Bordetella, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

We want to make sure our patients are protected against life-threatening conditions, but we never want to over-vaccinate. Over-vaccination can lead to potential adverse reactions. Before giving vaccines, we may run a titer test first. This is a simple blood test that is used to determine the level of antibodies in your pet’s system that are resistant against certain viruses. Titer tests are a bit pricier than vaccines, however, the results may indicate that your pet doesn’t need certain vaccines to stay protected. Even better, if results are negative, we will administer necessary vaccines free of charge!

Microchip Identification

We never want your pet to find themselves away from their forever home.

Microchips provide your pet with a unique identity that will last a lifetime. This permanent form of identification is painlessly implanted beneath your pet’s skin much like a vaccination. About the size of a grain of rice, a tiny microchip holds your contact information, protecting the special bond between you and your forever friend. Losing your pet is scary, but microchips make a reunion more possible.

We highly recommend all pets be microchipped as a permanent form of identification, even indoor pets!

Parasite Prevention

Parasites pose a greater threat during warmer months, but they are actually present year-round. To keep your pet protected from fleas, ticks, intestinal parasites and heartworms, we strongly recommend routine testing and year-round preventative medication. We also like to educate our clients on common symptoms and ways to control parasites in and around their home for a healthy and parasite-free pet 365 days a year.

Lab Work

At Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen, we strongly recommend lab work during your pet’s annual exam as a proactive step of preventive care. Lab work helps us pinpoint hidden conditions and changing health trends that may display little to no symptoms. This is especially beneficial in identifying a condition early-on when it is most treatable and cost-conscious. Along with general wellness and disease detection, lab work guarantees the safety of our patients prior to administering anesthesia and prescribing medications.

We commonly perform complete blood counts (CBC), blood chemistry profiles, parasite testing, urinalysis, FeLV/FIV screening, and titers.
